Renewables

Why Renewables? The Challenges

Resource limits

Renewables are resource-limited: they can only work where there are sufficient resources (sun, wind, etc.). Geothermal resources are quite limited, wind resources somewhat less so but still far from ubiquitous. Photovoltaic systems will work anywhere the sun shines, but they are considerably more expensive and in addition will yield more electricity in sunnier locations. Many utilities do not have the option of siting a wind or geothermal power plant in their service territory. Siting, or buying the output from, a plant far away from one's service territory is of course always an option, but doing so reduces the perceived tangibility of the plant – which can make it less politically attractive. (Some utilities install rooftop PV systems in their service territories not because they make economic or financial sense, but because they are a visible and tangible demonstration of their commitment to renewables).
